Your Recovery From Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty treatment on female eye Eyelid surgery can be done for cosmetic reasons, but it can also be done because excess tissue around the eyes can cause functional problems or problems with sight. Whatever the reason you are getting eyelid surgery, you may be a bit nervous – most people are when it comes to the word “surgery”! Read on for some tips to keep in mind for after your surgery, for a quick and comfortable recovery period.

A few eyelid surgery basics

Eyelid surgery, also known as “blepharoplasty,” can be done on the upper lids, the lower lids, or both. It can remove sagging skin and fat that makes eyes look puffy (which can make a person look older than they are) or interferes with vision or normal functioning of the eyelids. The surgery typically takes less than 2 hours.

Your recovery period

Your doctor will have specific instructions to help you heal comfortably. These will probably include:

• After the procedure, it is common to have some bruising and swelling. Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling, even when sleeping. Over-the-counter pain medication can help you to feel better, and ice packs can help to bring down the swelling.

• You should plan on staying at home for a few days to heal. Prepare ahead of time for a few days of relaxing. You may want to stock up on groceries so that you don’t have to go out, and make some meals ahead of time so you don’t have to do too much after your surgery.

• Avoid a lot of screen time, make-up, and wearing contact lenses, and give your body a chance to heal by avoiding strenuous activity. At home, keep lighting dim, and when you do have to leave the house, make sure to wear sunglasses.

• You may be bored after a while, but it is important that you let yourself relax and heal. If you try to get back to your normal activities before you are healed, it can result in injuries that can set your recovery back.
